Bathhouse Brooklyn: An Honest Review of the Oasis-Like Spa

bath house brooklyn

Escape everyday stresses with our Platza treatment, relax, rejuvenate, and wash away all the tensions of everyday life inside our Turkish and Russian Steam Rooms. We welcome everyone to experience our Banya and afterword’s please enjoy the fine dining in our Red Zone Sports Bar/Restaurant. The stretch and massage therapist tailored the experience to my needs and the specific areas of my body that were feeling inflamed. Lying down on a hammam and having warm water thrown on me was not something I imagined myself doing during the pandemic, but I am so glad I did. Afterward, my skin was so soft from the scrub (I think there must have been natural oils in the material).

STEAM ROOM

This is our pick for get-togethers large and small (like a birthday or bachelorette). The Day Spa Party package includes Champagne upon arrival, brunch and cocktails and a little gift to take home. There’s nothing quite as luxurious as bathtime with a glass of bubbly in your hand. And lucky for us, WORLD SPA, a brand new 50,000-square-foot urban bathhouse is opening in Brooklyn tomorrow, Thursday, December 8, providing NYers with the ultimate destination to relax and unwind. Service was top-notch and the dishes were well-developed without feeling pretentious. The food was delicious, seasonal, and healthy with no refined sugars or grains on the menu.

Aire Ancient Baths

Since it was one of my first experiences of the sort, I was nervous going into it, but the staff was welcoming and the space felt inviting—not too intimidating. I would love to return someday and treat myself to another massage, and to be able to spend more time in that tropi-sauna. The waterfall overlooks a cold plunge pool and a jacuzzi, and you can also enjoy the River Rock sauna and the Chakra-Light steam room. Bathhouse, made famous for its unconventional method of heating pools via Bitcoin mining, confirmed to PIX11 it had plans to expand upward with a rooftop pool and garden for guests, with food and beverage. The new rooftop space, first reported by Greenpointers, is not intended as a party spot, according to a representative of Bathhouse. Spas are thrilling new neighborhood additions no matter what, but an urban bathhouse and wellness club focusing on treatments originating from all over the world is likely to bring a whole new level of excitement to any city area.

Bathhouse Experience, 1Hr 20 Min

For an upscale fine dining experience, the spa is also home to Chef Shaun Hergatt’s newest venture, REN Restaurant. The moist heat of a steam room is especially beneficial for circulation, lowering blood pressure, and clearing sinuses by stimulating deeper breaths and increasing your heart rate. If you purchase a membership for someone else or a gift certificate that is going to be used to obtain a membership, please give the name of this person to our receptionist.

Tropical Sauna

Before you email Ronan Farrow or jump into the Mystery Machine, know that you don’t have the scoop on a new cult in Williamsburg. And inside the giant spa, there’s a 40-seat restaurant with big windows, candlelit marble tables, and a small L-shaped bar. You could eat here independently of the spa, but the beef tartare just isn’t as exciting when there’s not a bath towel wrapped around your head. The staff at the World Spa Lounge will prepare small bites from around the world alongside coffees, teas, smoothies and kombucha. The destination will also hold a liquor license and so visitors will get to unwind with a cocktail, wine or a beer as well. Perhaps most notably given the usual offerings at other spas around town, World Spa will also serve food endemic to the cultures that its various treatments highlight.

But if you come in off the street and sit at a candlelit table like it’s any other restaurant, you’ll feel like an outsider. You’ll notice every waft of chlorine-scented air, and when your server asks if you’re pre- or post-spa, you’ll chug your drink so you’re not the only one here without flushed cheeks. The glassed-in entryway acts as a smoking atrium for jolly shirtless men, and leads into a covered beer garden and hockey-themed cafe. Inside, the main, fluorescent-lit pool room fills with sounds of splashing and socializing from crowds of Eastern European families. Saunas and steam rooms are also coed, and massages and platza (a traditional Russian sauna treatment) can be tacked onto the experience. After my time in the baths, I had the chef’s tasting menu at the restaurant and everyone was lovely.

My favorite was the tropical one since I still felt the most comfortable there. No list of NYC bathhouses would be complete without this East Village institution. It has a storied past that dates back to 1892 that includes celebrity devotees (like Frank Sinatra and Mark Ruffalo) and is riddled with family conflicts. The brothers who co-owned the space have since retired, but their successors continue to run the business on alternating weeks, an arrangement based on a suspicious feud (you can book David’s shift or Boris’s shift online).

CityWell Brooklyn

I would go again based on the services, staff and restaurant, especially with a friend who was in need of some serious pampering. Brooklyn Bathhouse is a destination for relaxation and rejuvenation in the heart of Brooklyn. Conveniently located near Prospect Park, the Parade Grounds, and the Q and 2/3 Trains, Brooklyn Bathhouse serves the athletes, the hard-working career men and women, and anyone in need of a little self-care. Amenities and services include two types of saunas, a steam room, hot and cool salt pools, bodywork massage, and a cafe.

OPENING HOURS

But everyone working there was so lovely and kind, and the treatments were worth it. They’d also taken a lot of care to find interesting wines from less well-known varietals and often overlooked regions, so if you’re interested in retoxing after your detox, that’s an option, too. The restaurant staff was so lovely and provided tons of information about what we were drinking and eating, plus answered all of my questions and let me take a picture of a label with a really cool design. The facilities here include a heated swimming pool, steam and rain showers, traditional Japanese soaking tubs, a relaxation lounge, treatment rooms, and personalized spa concierge services. And that’s exactly when you should eat here - holding a glass of Champagne in a robe after a 90-minute massage.

The only thing that was slightly distracting was the music—it moved from ambient spa music to techno to acoustic and it made it a little hard to relax during the service. Mermaid Spa located in the Sea Gate area of Brooklyn has a reputation for being the best Russian baths in New York. Besides three Russian steam rooms, this bathhouse has a scorching dry sauna, a Turkish bath, two tile pools that are machine-fed with chopped ice and a circular Jacuzzi inside a lodge-like wooden hall. Owners Zina and Boris Kotlyar, Joseph Feldsherov say they wanted to create an environment that was similar to an old style banya in Russia. "Marble is so cold, wood helps you feel warmer." The great quality of steam also helps to feel warmer. Mermaid Spa also offers Russian platza with soap or venik - a leafy bundle of birch or oak twigs.

The working from home aspect of life has made it difficult for me to separate time for relaxation, and this day was an exercise in working against that. To be frank, I have not had a lot of experiences in spa or luxury environments, so again, I was trying to understand how I should behave. Thankfully it was a more casual energy than I expected, and everyone was pretty laid back and talkative. I remember delicately stepping into the body temp pool and floating in it, attempting to remove stressful thoughts—but I found myself needing to talk through them. I went back and forth between pools for a few minutes (except the cold one which was too cold, colder than the water at Rockaway Beach in May). It was my first time entering a sauna, and I tried out all three (tropical, dry, and a steam room).

This place ensures you of elite treatments like massages, facials, and scrubs. The facilities here include a starlight steam room, tropical and dry saunas, heated marble hammas, and three thermal pools. I would not recommend going to Bathhouse looking for quiet, bliss, and the typical spa-sounds playlist. World music is pumping, people are laughing and speaking loudly, and all amenities are in a shared space (besides your treatment). (It’s hard not to, as the space is compact.) Cleanliness is one thing that I am usually paranoid about when I go to spas or shared bathing spaces. Bathhouse felt, looked, and smelled very clean—staff are constantly replenishing the water dispenser, clearing abandoned towels, and wiping down surfaces.

The spa is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and combines Asian, American and European spa remedies. I wish I had gotten a facial, so maybe I’ll return for that treatment, but I don’t know that I would recommend visiting the baths to just anyone. The experience with and observing some of the other guests left a bad taste in my mouth.

It was a lot of meat, but they do ask if you have any dietary restrictions, and honestly, the vegan dish was the best thing I tried. This amazing place combines services like state-of-the-art aqua therapy, blissful spa treatments and services, traditional health offerings, and saunas. Come to Bathhouse with a group or the person who takes up the other half of your bed, and spend the day soaking in thermal pools or doing absolutely nothing in sensory deprivation tanks downstairs. By the time you finish your oysters and wine, you’ll be one of those suspiciously happy people in a beige linen robe. Alternating temperature therapy is amazing for just about anyone, but especially athletes.

In 2021, a DOB inspector noted that the building’s facade was dangerously damaged in multiple places. The following year, the building’s owner was fined for failing to repair the facade — and the violations were still open as of April 22, 2024. An all-hands fire tore through a Bath Beach apartment building on Sunday night after a resident said she dropped a candle inside her apartment. Petitioners are also worried about the removal of a water tower on 56 Berry St., part of the proposed construction plans filed with city officials this month. Meanwhile, fliers have cropped up around Williamsburg calling for locals to oppose the rooftop expansion, and a petition to halt the construction has grown 300 signatures strong. Le Crocodile is a French restaurant in the bottom of the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg.

When Bathhouse arrived in Brooklyn two years ago, the wellness destination—which offers massages, facials, scrubs, communal pools, and a full-service restaurant—became the talk of Williamsburg. So four W editors ventured to the North side to test it out, and gave their honest opinions. This bathhouse is a stress-free zone and you can get extra treatments like massages, platza, mud and salt treatments. There is also a comprehensive spa menu with services like massage therapy, body scrubs and wraps, platza, and other special offers. The Wall Street Bath and Spa is a unique ultra-modern facility that affords you all the comfort and relaxation that you need.
